Dress for Success.................Success Stories

This is what their clients say about Dress for Success

Dear Dress for Success

My sincere gratitude for helping me getting a job recently!

I was involved in a bad physical accident six months ago. I lost a lot of function in my arm and shoulder. This really dented my confidence, and I also gained 10 kilos. My clothes from before the accident no longer fit me. I started applying for work again a few months back, and was successful in getting some interviews. I was too anxious and fidgeted in ill fitting clothes throughout the interviews. Because I was on a sickness benefit, there was just no way that I could afford to buy new clothes.

So last week, I applied for a job that I really liked, and got offered an interview. I was referred to Dress for Success by Victoria University Graduates Network. It all happened really fast, and before I knew it, I had an appointment with Dress for Success the day before my job interview.

I’ve been living in a regional town for the last few years, and I knew that the dress code at my new potential job in Wellington would be a big step up. I’m not the most feminine of dressers, and generally struggle to get past the black pants and tidy shirt look.

I was really warmly welcomed into Dress for Success for my appointment and I sat down and browsed the look books for some ideas. I wanted to look professional, capable, tidy, and feminine but not sexualised. I really felt listened to by your staff in a non-judgemental manner when I went over what I wanted and my needs for the interview.

I got introduced to my dresser, who was lovely and built my confidence. She made all sorts of suggestions, and made it clear that I had to be comfortable in what I chose. I experimented with different looks, knowing that there was no obligation to buy, or pressure from sales staff.

I was insecure about accessories, such as jewellery, and makeup. It was so great to be able to discuss my concerns with the ladies, and find things that I was comfortable wearing.

The whole process was a great confidence boost, and I entered my job interview the next day feeling like a million dollars. I felt professional, and had people compliment me on my appearance as I went down to the building. The interview went great - I sat still and straight, and didn’t fidget in ill-fitting clothes.

I got offered the job, and then with my newly found confidence negotiated a pay rise. It can be really hard to get your foot in the door, but as of Tuesday, I have my first permanent full time professional job. I am so pleased to have outfits sorted for my first week, and not to have to worry about my appearance. I also picked up an office dress which I will wear (this is a first for me!). I want to do the best job possible for my employer, and get on with it. My new employer is supportive of my disability and now WINZ won’t be on my case to go work as a manual labourer.

Thank you so much for equipping me so well for the next stage of life. I am so thankful. I wanted to extend a sincere thanks for all your help, and I will be telling my job seeking friends.

'Dress for Success did a big turn in my life and I will never forget your organisation'.

- we need it'.
